Lake Chelan Retreat

When Cathy Li found the site above Lake Chelan in the Cascade Mountains she fell in love. The site was not an easy one, but the surrounding vineyards and the rugged mountain lake below were enticing. Cathy purchased the property on behalf of her extended family and started the search for an architect. She found the team at Johnston Architects. Ray and Mary Johnston, founders of the firm, had extensive experience building in extreme environments ranging from high mountain sites to ocean and lake front locations. They were eager to assist the Li family in pursuit of a wonderful new family retreat.
Cathy’s goal was to host her extended family at this amazing location. While the lake provided ample recreation opportunities, it was 80 feet below the arrival point of the site. The house would need to take full advantage of the spectacular views, connect physically and visually to the lake and at the same time provide recreation right out the living room doors.
Ray suggested a terraced approach. Visitors arrive at the upper terrace and garage experiences hints as to the environment beyond. A gracious stair descends in the wind shadow of the surrounding hill to the front door.
Passing through the entry, the expanse of Lake Chelan and the Cascade Sawtooth Range unfurls. From the great room, the pool and hot tub complete the living terrace. Dropping further, a family room and additional bedrooms open onto the lower level of the site. Vineyards are planned on the slope below for near-term installation.

The house was the product of a collaborative process between Johnston Architects and the Li Family. Four bedrooms and a bunk room were essential. The idea of a form that welcomes the outside in was also important. The aspiring shed roof assures that the surrounding environment is part of the living experience. The great room flows out to the exterior living space on the main floor, and a dramatic stair connects the living floor to bedrooms and the lower terrace of the site.
Cathy was an important part of the collaborative process and provided inspiration for design. In addition to her appreciation of the site and the need to accommodate both older and younger members of her extended family, she brought an intuitive approach to interior design. Working with designers at Johnston Architect, whimsical notes were added to the design. These included wonderful vintage chandeliers as well as delightful choices for furnishings and art works.

The Chelan House is a refuge from the busy vacation environment of the City of Chelan, a pavilion within the wonderful wine country of Washington State and a deep connection between cozy and comfortable interior spaces and spectacular surroundings.
